SEO Copywriting That You Can Trust
Copywriting really can make or breaks the success of your marketing investments, especially your website investment. Every single site is affected by the need for good communication, in one form or another. Ideally a beautifully designed website would work hand-in-hand with how you communicate your business to your website visitors.
Unfortunately, copy is often overlooked. We see it all the time. Honestly, it’s HARD to take a step back from the business you are in day-to-day and write really clear and effective copy.
To help you, we’ve outlined the top 5 costliest copywriting mistakes we see – and what you should look out for and avoid!
The Top 5 Copy Mistakes We See All the Time
- Company-Centric, Not Customer-Centric Copy
When you have website copy that is not written for your target market, you can fail to connect with them or gain their trust. Ultimately this impacts the number of website visitors that reach out and become leads or sales. By writing for your customer, you increase your chances of visitors actually converting.
Suggestion: Take a look at your website, do you talk all about you, what you do or how awesome you are? Or, do you identify and relate to your target market’s questions, pain points and concerns?
- Lack of Message Clarity
This happens when your site says a lot of things but the average person, who knows nothing about you, reads it and still doesn’t know what you do or why they should buy from you. This is a common problem and relatively easy to identify and fix.
Suggestion: Get a third-party to visit your website, ask them questions like…what they think you do, how do they think they should contact you, what pain you solve for them etc.
- No Call to Action
The purpose of most websites is to convert a visitor, whether that’s into a sale or a lead. Yet, we find that sites can often be shy about trying to get that conversion. Website visitors need to be told what to do to contact you or purchase … and it needs to be easy for them to find.
Suggestion: take a look at your website, does the hero section (the portion of the website you can see before you scroll) on each page have a clear and obvious call to action provide information but don’t clearly tell us what to do with it.
- Not Google-Friendly
This happens when your copy doesn’t follow Google’s SEO best practices. If this is the case, you can lose out on higher search engine rankings and therefore making it harder for your customers to find you in search engines. If you’ve already invested in a website design and good copy, why not also give Google what they want to improve your rankings and get more website visitors?
Suggestion: This is a harder one to check on your own, we’d be happy to review your site with you with a quick and free SEO copy audit. No obligation, we’re just happy to help!
- Bland and Personality-less
Website communication is much different to any form of communication that can be face-to-face. When someone comes to your website, they read a message and get an overall feeling for who you are and what you’re about. Studies have consistently shown that the most effective and memorable websites are ones that show some kind of authentic personality within their copy. Your website represents your company (or you), showing a bit of human-ness in your website copy can be really important.
Suggestion: Read through some pages on your website. Does it have a personality, does it feel like there’s a person on the other end that wrote the copy, are you engaged when you read you’re own website copy?
